About the Program

What Is a JSM Docent?

Think of it as being a friendly guide โ€” no formal training required, just your experience and a welcoming spirit.

Remember your first JSM? The maze of sessions, the overwhelming schedule, the uncertainty about where to go or who to talk to? A docent is an experienced attendee who helps first-timers navigate all of that.

You don't need to have all the answers. You just need to be approachable and willing to share what you've learned from attending past JSMs โ€” the tips, the shortcuts, the unwritten rules that make the experience so much better.

It's one of the simplest and most meaningful ways to give back to our community.

Wear Your Ribbon

A special ribbon on your badge lets newcomers know you're someone they can approach with questions.

๐Ÿ“Œ

Sport Your Button

A distinctive docent button makes you easy to spot in sessions, hallways, and social events.

๐Ÿ’ฌ

Start a Conversation

Answer questions, share tips, and help new attendees feel like they belong from day one.

How It Works

Three Simple Steps

Becoming a docent takes just a few minutes to sign up and minimal time at the conference.

01

Fill out a short form with your name, email, and a bit about you and your interests.

02

Pick Up Your Kit

At registration, grab your docent ribbon and button. Attach them to your badge so newcomers can easily identify you as a friendly resource.

03

Attend the Orientation

If you arrive in time, join the Sunday First-Time Attendee Orientation session. Your presence means newcomers can meet you right away and have a familiar face for the rest of JSM.

The Commitment

What We're Asking Of You

We designed this to be as light-touch as possible. Here's everything involved.

๐ŸŽ—๏ธ

Wear Your Ribbon & Button

Attach them to your conference badge each day. They signal to newcomers that you're approachable and happy to help.

๐Ÿ˜Š

Be Friendly & Open

If someone approaches you with a question, give them a warm response. You don't need every answer โ€” pointing them in the right direction is plenty.

๐Ÿ“‹

Attend the Orientation

If you are available, join the Sunday First-Time Attendee Orientation session and help the newcomers get oriented to JSM.

๐ŸŽ‰

Enjoy JSM!

That's it. Go to your sessions, attend the events you want, and simply be available if someone needs help. No extra meetings or reports required.

Time commitment: Beyond the orientation session, there are no additional scheduled obligations. Just wear your identifiers and be your helpful self throughout the conference.
