About the JSM Docent Program
About
Why We Created the Docent Program
Conferences can be incredible experiences — packed with learning, networking, and inspiration. But for first-time attendees, they can also feel overwhelming, isolating, and hard to navigate.
We started the JSM Docent Program because we believe that a single friendly conversation can transform someone's entire JSM experience. When a newcomer has someone they can turn to with questions — even simple ones like "where's the best place for lunch?" or "which sessions would you recommend?" — they feel welcomed, valued, and part of the community.
The word docent comes from the Latin docēre, meaning "to teach." But our docents aren't lecturers — they're guides, mentors, and welcoming ambassadors who help first-timers get the most out of their conference experience.
Easy to Identify
Docents wear a distinctive ribbon and button so newcomers can spot them anywhere at JSM.
Low Commitment
We respect your conference time. If you are available, we invite you to attend the first-time attendee orientation.
Big Impact
A small gesture of friendliness can turn a nervous first-timer into an engaged, returning community member.
Who Can Be a Docent?
If You've Attended At Least 2 JSMs, You Qualify
There are no special credentials needed. If you've attended at least two previous JSMs and you're willing to be friendly and approachable, you're exactly who we're looking for.
Any Experience Level
Whether this is your third JSM or your twentieth, you have insights that newcomers will find valuable.

Statisticians, data scientists, educators, students, industry professionals — we want docents from every part of our community.
