Common Questions About Being a Docent
Everything you might want to know before signing up. If your question isn't answered here, feel free to reach out to us.
Do I need any special qualifications?
Not at all! If you've attended at least two previous JSMs, you have the experience newcomers are looking for. No formal training is needed — just a willingness to be friendly and share what you know.
How much time does this take away from the conference?
Very little. The only scheduled commitment is the First-Time Attendee Orientation and only if you are available. After that, you attend the conference as you normally would — you're just wearing your ribbon and being open to answering questions as they come up.
What if someone asks me something I don't know?
That's completely fine! You can point them to the registration desk, the conference app, or another resource. The goal isn't to be an encyclopedia — it's to be a friendly face who can help newcomers feel less lost.
Can I sign up with a friend or colleague?
Absolutely! The more docents the merrier. Encourage your fellow experienced attendees to sign up too — it makes the whole conference more welcoming for everyone.
Where do I pick up my ribbon and button?
Your docent kit will be available at the main registration desk when you check in. Just let them know you signed up as a docent and they'll have everything ready for you.
What kinds of questions do first-time attendees usually ask?
The range is wide and usually practical! Common questions include where to find specific rooms, which sessions to attend for a particular interest area, how the poster sessions work, where to eat nearby, how to make the most of networking events, and general tips for navigating the conference. Nothing you wouldn't be comfortable answering from your own experience.
Do I need to stay at the conference the entire time?
No! Attend whatever portions of the conference you'd normally attend. If you need to leave early one day or skip a session, that's completely fine.
Will I be matched with a specific first-time attendee?
The program is designed to be informal rather than a formal mentor/mentee pairing. You'll be identified as a docent so that any first-time attendee can approach you. That said, at the orientation you may naturally connect with particular newcomers, and those organic connections are wonderful.
Is there any follow-up after the conference?
We will send a brief evaluation asking how the experience went so we can improve the program for next year. There's no obligation to fill it out, but your feedback is always appreciated.
I'm an introvert — can I still be a docent?
Yes! Being a docent doesn't mean you need to work the room or seek out conversations. It simply means you're open to answering questions when someone approaches you. Many of our best docents are quiet, thoughtful people who make newcomers feel comfortable precisely because they listen well and give honest, helpful answers.
